Tornado European Championships – Onboard with Live Commentary GBR2 –

Tornado European Championships – Onboard with Live Commentary GBR2 –

Posted on November 30, 2019 by Nicholas Wright

okay is Joe here for Joyrider TV now
we’ve got three and a half minutes to go to the start of the seventh race that’s
one from the end of the Tornado Europeans here at Lake Garda in Italy his Swedish
Hey yaaaaah
it’s this f*cking started race oh excuse my French what’s worse the swearing yes
we won’t apologize already now for any swearing the might occur there now during
this video that price Eddie out all right let’s gybe there so the wind is building it’s probably
now everybody’s bunching up here new to the committee boat ends I’m gonna just
tag me Bob maybe a bit earlier near the Swiss guys a bit more
starboard bias on the start line then we’ve been heavy just try not to early so just parking up there traveller
out chips on tight so that we can keep the boat moving shorting the trapeze took a transit earlier seems we’re
pretty safe just here looks like there’s a definite line of wind just over to the
left of where we are here so we’ll try to get into that as soon as we can so I
think we go for the pin again maybe not right a tap-in maybe get
hooked on ready we’re gonna try to explode off the start line here three seven seven again for an explosion nice really great and they made it okay and as soon as we’ve got a clear
line to attack we attack over so people go pretty soon and dump the
Australians right 3 2 they stack in the world so this case we’re looking for the mark have a look around little bit high far enough away Joanie’s just looking she wins oh yes we take now
he’s gonna have to make this an emotional moment for them heroic in some Austrians there’s
something similar folks it or Austrians have snagged a
mark it’s bad day for them the air Charlotte okay just looking
through the window here try not to hit anyone so right there just going over yeah that’s right we just sailed
underneath there oh it’s Johnny Rapid Response Unit kite is up pulling and
we’re off on the next leg in hot pursuit that was very exciting there is some
solid gold footage I thought they were capsizing better how
they actually did that so just keeping the pace on here we’ve got the pace on like this boat
stays a lot steadier like a train it’s like it’s on Rails like a train is on
Rails unless it’s just derailed which would be like a disaster for the
passengers and the railway company alike so we’re just trying to keep our train
on the rails here we’re going really nicely I can’t see where the oldies are
maybe they’ve I think people have drives off are they’re just down there we are
gaining on them and we’re pulling away from the Italians
who nearly spooned it there and we sailed under to presale into a big hole
we’re gonna throw a jive in almost immediately so you stay in this Gustav
but we really are knocking it down we know Johnny’s having a good look down
there see where DeMarcus okay cause or the Aussies are stuck a
bow in oh that’s our time to monopolize on their bow sticking we are absolutely
cracking here for the wind feels great I think Johnny might even be smiling at
this occasion it’s a number one in a long line of moody Suites have to deal
with all right just move forward a bit John
I’m going to come in so just getting ready for the jive somebody will drive here you ready John all right maybe you should go can you go
out on the on the wire yeah he’ll get over the top of him or there’s some
aggressive steering on board there crikey now this is the trick shot it’s getting
over the top of someone like this try not to bear down onto them it’s just
very exciting okay yeah now we’re looking for boats coming down on
starboard tack so probably have to go behind this white
spinnaker and then bang the jibe in although we could drive on top of them
watch out and they’d see ya let’s jive here ready I’ll get a stick ready for the mantra it
a bit bad boat handling there from the helmsman I’ll tell you let’s drop it there okay trying to get good-morrow minute Johnny
nice job stretch his legs for a bit get sucked into the dirt I think clear
lane yeah I think to go to decline just dumping quite a lot sheet there one of the big questions is where is
Danny inconstant wait see the footage of going underneath that of the tornado in the press esra ladies Johnny pretty good looking for the mark mark is currently
on 10:45 watch such the swatch sure
low budget or right if you don’t like wind direction looking pretty sweet whoa to the country coming across in the German flag and
then in the Swiss guys you could say make them out sorry Scott I’m not gonna head there
from the boom but nothing that snagged on a bit of elastic
now the Swiss Botox on top of us are neither gone under please off the download available time
point guys downhill good vibes Express Swiss guys
oh look at the italians up in Italian style oh my goodness that is
so I’d say perhaps Johnny went in a little bit early there but who’s arguing
not me we’ll just see if we can yeah yeah we don’t they do the same thing
again it’s very similar situation just
watching that boat make sure we’re not going to bear right off on them we’ll
catch the kite on their bowsprit and looking for the kite is up there’s
Johnny with the sheet and now let’s put put the beans down just need to get that
to fill and off we go okay QC under we bury we’ve got someone
directly under us yeah okay okay we got boats coming up wind as well
okay just see the wake off that boat yeah I’ll go down a bit
yeah I know that’s not consequence all right now let’s know we’ve got clear
line we’ll get the boat trucking again like we did last time
hopefully Swedish John here is one of the finest spinnaker trimmers onboard
the boat gbr to the only way that we know where this
boat is underneath us is by their weight which is a little bit alarming at times
yeah we could see him we’ve got a pace on him oh shit yeah I hadn’t seen that
well spotted okay we need these other clip okay you
might to punt the kite John at the moment than these guys which is
mean that we naturally want it well look at that angle we almost if I come in we
might even make it around the gate might be a little bit precarious yeah I mean
anyway not going out again well let these guys go past to get more of a
clean line ok those Italians always dangerous and what’s the word
lively lively I think yeah I think okay yeah let’s go here we
go for the jive maybe maybe out on the wire there Johnny
Oh that worked out pretty well actually yeah well I can see a bit bad now she a
little bit so if jived early which means we’re
going to be coming across in front of that Italian boat with rights which is
nice for a change yeah I see it yeah all right we go
driving free to one am which I bear nice right drop the kite early its windsurfer
its discovery the color of adrenaline right now and that stuff is as brown as
it gets these guys are gonna park at the boy which is a little bit this house for speaker okay Sonia we are getting a little bit richer some
30 wait pressure – do good right here yeah
all right let’s go gonna swell I’ll be the highlight of the whole
reactor attack so here seconds all right of TV those other places now to us what we did
to them so we’re not looking for so golden now right so looking for the Mars coming up a little bit on the trapeze so that we’re gonna text really the positions coming in here bit of a pain spin up maybe we’ll have a
speeds get past these guys Johnny’s got go in anyway I’m ready for the Big Bear way okay and it’s up now we’re in a pretty poor position here
underneath these guys I got to go up yeah I could just see him through the
window so I’m trying to stay up a bit so if we do get the big gust we’d have to
funk it funk in the spinnaker basically means get a little bit James Brown on it
and just releasing it for a second so we’d have to bear away
it’s not attractive chicks don’t like it but sometimes it is necessary here we
are we’re going for the finish line this time stone to gold serious ones get in
front of the boat in front and another not to let anybody through so here we go just very delicate here
not to put too much beans on just to keep this bad boy absolutely hurtling
across the tranquil waters of Lake Garda Italy see Kyle in the water there they’re very
brave see girls here at Garda they only take off right at the last minute you
feel you’re gonna run them down but a bit too cunning for you there that’s
what you think yeah I might come onto the boat now
change modes a little bit Winston a little bit lighter oh not just yet I
think I think that would be dangerous all those boats behind go a lot deeper
which yeah let’s drive on the next gust here
comes and okay we’ll drive there lovely type-ahead from Johnny Johnny
knows how execute a nice job and that was a now just looking at these based on
started coming down hopefully we’ve got with it real ring switching moments Center
onboard babbling wait for this Johnny needs to change his pants well Humber Louis or so really are looking pretty tight
with your Z’s save for the finish I think they are they have got the upper
hand slightly does depend on the bias at the finish line go check this over the back don’t want
any more looking for the other end of the line yeah they’ve absolutely gotta
just like some sort of fish there unfortunately our feet these Swiss guys
have done it as well all right so we’re gonna jive yeah we’ll try there okay White’s gonna join that time but then Mia bad boy night for warning alarm
going off probably anywhere in the vicinity okay and that’s to finish I
think we probably fit for sick fair let’s drop the kite very exciting so I
hope you’ve enjoyed watching that that was in fact the best race of the regatta
for us so fitting the comment the live commentary is obviously working well
which scared keeping the head down that was a bad job
what’s going on is it surely that’s not it it’s too it’s 250 surely there’s
another race okay surely there’s another race surely
there’s another race well anyway thanks for watching it’s been a bit a pleasure
taking you around this race course webisode you enjoyed the thrills and
spills and wasn’t too much swearing okay we are being signaled to go back in so
that is it it’s the end of the regatta those
international jury there are always always standing by knows the race
committee doing a fine job there’s Lake Garda but Johnny is devastated
we were hoping for one more race from

I noticed how you don’t go ‘block to block’ sailing upwind. Why is that?

Hello Jo, thank you for the brilliant video! It was very funny how my reaction to the video was. My resting heart rate is usually 55-60 beats per minute. After about 7 minutes of your video I had an average heart rate of 98!
Too bad that you couldn´t have a second run yet. I'm sure if you and your crew would sail regattas more often, then you would be right at the front. I went with you the whole time! The Spi maneuver on the windward mark was very nice. I never seen somebody do it like you do. Very interesting way of sloping away, just staying in the trapeze. Very awesome. I hope that someday I will have the money again to learn a trick or two from you in the sailing school. I drove on regattas last 2008-09 with the Hobie Tiger as crew. It was a nice time. I wish you a nice winter season and hope that you can power up for a nice 2019 season.
    best regards Olli

For that situation around 34 minutes when you wanted to go above that boat, couldn’t you have just eased the traveler then that would give you more height?

Technical question. I noticed you pulled out the spinniker at one point, then you did a gybe and soon after pulled it back into the bag (not being used). Why? How do you tactically use the spin sail?

Hi Joseph & Crew, LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT, Yeah Baby, great video and makes me SUPER excited to sail again this season. I have a T here in land locked British Columbia and it's a blast that's for sure. Your Spinnaker running rigging is very slick.. Can you by any chance show a close up of your rigging routing and would also be very interested in learning the best method for attaching and tightening the Spin Pole forward and mid stays. It would greatly appreciated if possible.
In the mean time Enjoy and kiss your crew, he likes his fun too!

Hi Jo, I am rather new for catamaran sailing, and have a basic question for the beating lag. As probably on all other boat, you seem to pull on hard the jib sheet and leave it fixed, and you steer to the wind with this setup. How do you use the jib telltales? On slower type of boats you are trying to steer the boat for parallel telltales on both windward and leeward side, but it appears to me, that through the higher speed of catamarans the windward telltale is indicating very soon that "I am pointing too high". As I want to adjust – bear away, as I get more speed, it is indicating again, that I should bear away again. And that could go on until I start reaching. So is there an optimum pointing angle for beating which is indicated by the jib telltales? Thanks, Bence

I'm just in t he process of selling my spinnaker rigged Tornado after a few decades of racing. You guys are doing alright! Couple of things I noted: Crew is running downhaul on the beat. We normally have crew on mainsheet, constantly fine trimming it to maintain boat attitude and only use downhaul for major power changes in wind. Also, I like how you went to the trap at the bear away mark, leaving crew on tramp. We'd normally reverse that, helm staying on deck and crew trapping off rear corner…but I can see how your method gets you out faster, less re-positioning and crew is then much quicker when needing to drop sail.
